Terms and conditions

All visiting education groups must agree to the following terms and conditions:

Code of Conduct

At Jodrell Bank Discovery Centre we support and empower diverse audiences and communities to participate in science, culture and heritage. We aim to connect people with Jodrell Bank and with each other, and we understand the value of shared and inclusive experiences.

So we can provide our audiences with excellent service, remember that:

  • Verbally abusive, harassing, discriminatory, undermining, or threatening statements or behavior toward staff, volunteers or visitors are prohibited.
  • The principles of diversity, inclusion, and equal access apply to all aspects of our operations, across all individuals.

Phone free zone

Whilst onsite, all visitors must place their mobile phones on flight mode, or switch them off. Mobile phones must not be used to send or receive calls/messages/data for any reason. This is a condition of visiting the site. Jodrell Bank is a live radio observatory which is in operation 24 hours a day. Mobile phone signals interfere with our radio telescopes, and disrupt our scientific research.

If you need to make a call during your visit, you are welcome to use one of our landlines; simply ask a member of our staff. If you need to be contacted during the day, our main reception line can be used: 01477 571 766. Our staff will then relay the message to you.

Behaviour of learners on site

All children must be actively supervised by a responsible adult at all times during their visit. There must be a suitable ratio of adults to learners, taking into account their age and maturity (we recommend a ratio of 1:6 for Reception and Year 1 pupils and a ratio of 1:7 for Years 2-6).

Please see additional terms and conditions below, based on the package you book:

Planet, Space or Star packages

Minimum numbers

There is a minimum charge of 15 learners. That is, you are welcome to bring fewer than 15 learners, but you will be charged for 15. We are able to waive this for a limited number of SEN and PRU groups each year.

For secondary school and sixth form groups on the Star package, there is a minimum number of 40 learners.

Maximum numbers

For groups on the Planet package, there is a maximum of 30 learners per group.

For primary school aged groups on the Space/Star package, there is a maximum of 35 learners per group.

For secondary school aged groups on the Space/Star package, there is a maximum of 30 learners per group.

Confirmation

Education bookings must be confirmed via our online confirmation form at least 8 weeks before a visit (unless otherwise agreed, and with the exception of last minute bookings). We reserve the right to cancel bookings that are not confirmed after this deadline.

Payment

Full payment must be made in advance, at least 4 weeks before a visit. If your school/college/establishment is unable to do this, you must have agreed another means of payment with us before this time. We reserve the right to cancel bookings after this deadline.

Extra numbers

If on the day you bring more learners or adults than you originally paid for, these must be paid for upon arrival. However, numbers cannot exceed our maximum per group (see above). This is due to the capacity of our workshop and indoor lunch spaces.

Reducing your numbers

If you need to reduce the numbers of your booking, you must do this at least 4 weeks before your visit, or before payment is made (whichever is first). Otherwise we reserve the right to charge the original full cost of your visit. This is to cover staffing costs and resources which will already have been booked and purchased.

Absences on the day

We regret that we are unable to provide refunds for those who do not show up on the day. Processing refund payments for education groups is a time-consuming process. In order to provide an efficient service, and to keep costs as low as possible, we are unable to issue refunds.

Cancelling your trip

If you cancel your visit 4 weeks or more prior to your trip, your school/college/establishment will not be charged. If you cancel your visit less than 4 weeks prior to the date of your trip, your school/college/establishment will be charged the full cost of your visit. This is to cover staffing costs and resources which will already have been booked and purchased. If we are able to fill your booking, we may be able to offer a refund at our discretion.

Late arrivals/early departures

If for any reason your group is late arriving, or needs to leave earlier than planned on your itinerary, your booked workshops may need to be shortened, or cancelled.

Cancellation due to extraordinary circumstances

In the rare circumstance of a disruption causing your trip to be cancelled in an unforeseen and unavoidable circumstance (e.g. severe weather such as snow or storm), we will endeavour to reschedule your trip for a future date.

Exhibition only package

Minimum numbers

There are no minimum numbers for Exhibition only groups.

Maximum numbers

There is a maximum of 40 people (adults and children) per group. This is due to the capacity of our indoor lunch spaces.

Confirmation

Exhibition only bookings must be confirmed via our online confirmation form at least 2 weeks before a visit (unless otherwise agreed, and with the exception of last minute bookings). We reserve the right to cancel bookings that are not confirmed after this deadline.

Payment

Exhibition only groups are welcome to pay on arrival for the numbers brought on the day, by cash, card, or cheque. You can also pay in advance for the numbers booked, if you prefer.

For larger bookings (e.g. 2 groups or more per day), we may require payment in advance. This is because we may have to reserve you lunch spaces that would otherwise be given to groups on the Planet, Space, or Star packages.

Extra numbers (if paying in advance)

If on the day you bring more learners or adults than you originally paid for, these must be paid for upon arrival. However, numbers cannot exceed our maximum per group (see above). This is due to the capacity of our indoor lunch spaces.

Reducing your numbers and absences on the day (if paying in advance)

If you need to reduce the numbers of your booking, you must do this before payment is made.

We regret that we are unable to provide refunds for those who do not show up on the day. Processing refund payments for education groups is a time-consuming process. In order to provide an efficient service, and to keep costs as low as possible, we are unable to issue refunds.

Cancelling your trip

If you are paying on arrival, there is no charge for cancelling your visit.

If we have asked you to pay in advance, and you cancel your visit less than 2 weeks prior to the date of your trip, your school/college/establishment will be charged the full cost of your visit. This is to cover resources which will already have been booked. If we are able to fill your booking, we may be able to offer a refund at our discretion.

Cancellation due to extraordinary circumstances

In the rare circumstance of a disruption causing your trip to be cancelled in an unforeseen and unavoidable circumstance (e.g. severe weather such as snow or storm), we will endeavour to reschedule your trip for a future date.
