Commercial Media Enquiries

We receive a large amount enquiries for commercial film or photography for which we are only able to grant permissions if we feel there is clear benefit to Jodrell Bank and that we can appropriately accommodate the proposed activity. Early notification would be appreciated.

Filming at Jodrell Bank

Jodrell Bank, a UNESCO World Heritage site in Cheshire, offers unique filming opportunities with diverse interiors and architectural landscapes. Our experienced team handles both small and large-scale projects.

Applications are open for:

Approval Priorities:

  • No interference with scientific operations
  • Drone use requires prior consent

Public areas like the First Light Pavilion and Space Dome are managed by the Jodrell Bank Centre for Engagement (Location IDs #10251634, #10230546).

Telescopes and observatory areas require separate permissions from Jodrell Bank Observatory and Jodrell Bank Centre for Astrophysics.

Full site agreement is needed for surrounding land.

Non-commercial broadcasting near the telescopes is allowed; commercial advertising is restricted to specific areas.

  • Filming outside public hours (before 10:00 AM, after 4:00–5:00 PM)
  • Jodrell Bank is closed Mondays for private hire
  • OFCOM Radio silent zone: equipment must be in flight mode

Lead times:

  • Large-scale: 3-6 months (preferably 12)
  • Medium-scale: 4 weeks to 1 month
  • Small-scale: 14 days to 2 weeks

Special Considerations:

  • NDAs for confidential projects
  • Hirer provides security for confidential projects
  • Private entrance and parking for up to 255 vehicles available

 

  • LED lighting only
  • No fire, smoke, or vapor effects
  • Approved frequencies: 620 MHz-700 MHz
  • Health & Safety docs, risk assessments, and £5-10M insurance required
  • Small-scale: £100/hour (8+ crew)
  • Medium-scale: £150/hour (3-hour minimum)
  • Large-scale: From £2,000/day
  • Payment: 28 days, formal contracts

  • First visit: Free (max 3 hours)
  • Additional: £100/hour
