A Sizzling Solstice Weekend!

From thought-provoking discussions, to live music and workshops…

Launching an out of this world summer at Jodrell

Posted 2 Jul, 2025

How did you celebrate this year’s Summer Solstice?

At Jodrell Bank, we kicked off the weekend with an inspiring evening featuring Soul II Soul founder Jazzie B in conversation with David Olusoga, Professor of Public History, as part of Creative Manchester’s Solstice and Equinox series.

After a thought-provoking discussion on cultural legacy and the British music scene, Jazzie B brought his signature sound to the First Light Pavilion in an exciting DJ set that fused classic tracks with contemporary hits, embodying the spirit of Soul II Soul.

Professor Duncan Ivison, President and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Manchester, shared: “This is how universities can do more than generate knowledge – we can spark connection, creativity and joy. My thanks to everyone who made the evening so special.”

On Saturday 21 June, Jodrell then marked the Summer Solstice with a sizzling, solar-themed celebration, featuring a full day of family fun and an unforgettable evening event, The Longest Light.

Throughout the day, families enjoyed vibrant Carnival beats and giant puppetry brought to life by Global Grooves, a fascinating talk in our Meridian Hall, and a brand-new, explosive science show packed with fiery experiments.

As the sun set, Afrobeat artist Sens Sagna ignited the stage with a powerful live performance, followed by exclusive Lovell Lectures with Professor Philippa Browning. Guests also took part in hands-on creative workshops – from drumming circles to cyanotype crafting – and immersed themselves in a new Space Dome show exploring our closest star!

It was a joy to welcome so many people to Jodrell Bank for our Summer Solstice celebrations. Bringing together the science at the heart of the site with a vibrant cultural programme is the key to what we do, so the day was a powerful reflection of what makes Jodrell Bank so special – and why it inspires so many.
