Here at Jodrell Bank we see science as an integral part of culture.
Our own field of interest, Astronomy, has been a key part of the human experience for millennia, stretching back to Neolithic sites such as Newgrange in Ireland and Stonehenge in England; Chankillo in Peru and the Royal Observatory, Greenwich.
Jodrell Bank itself is underpinned by a story of great scientific achievement and discovery, intertwined with world events. On 7th July 2019, in recognition of its internationally significant heritage, science and cultural impact, Jodrell Bank Observatory was awarded UNESCO World Heritage Site status. This inscription acknowledges the site’s tremendous scientific endeavours and its role in achieving a transformational understanding of the Universe.
This part of our website explores the ways in which science and culture interact – both here at Jodrell Bank and elsewhere in the world.
