Southside Tours

Step back in time to where it all began in these exclusive, behind-the-scenes tours…

Step into history and celebrate 80 years of Jodrell Bank with our exclusive Southside Tours, offering a rare peek behind the curtain at the birthplace of radio astronomy.

Led by our expert guides, this outdoor walking tour provides an insider look at the origins of our UNESCO World Heritage Site, taking you on a one-of-a-kind journey through our historic grounds and back to where it all began…

From our early beginnings observing shooting stars, to the latest ground-breaking discoveries shaping our understanding of the Universe, discover how the “make-do and mend” attitude of post-war scientists transformed the University’s experimental botany grounds into a trailblazing research facility.

The Southside Tours are an exclusive experience offered as part of our 80th anniversary celebrations with limited spaces available; don’t miss this chance to learn first-hand about the inspiring stories and pioneering moments that made Jodrell Bank the world class site it is today.

The tour will last approximately 1 hour 30 minutes and will take place outside, uncovering areas of the grounds not usually accessible to the public. Due to the historic nature of the site, paths may be uneven in some places and visitors are asked to please wear sturdy footwear and dress according to the weather conditions.  Recommended for ages 14+.

*Please note that this a strictly outdoor guided walking tour of a working Observatory; as such, it will not be possible to access inside the Observatory buildings.
