This summer solstice, step into the quantum universe…
17.00 – 21.45
Join us at Jodrell Bank as we once again partner with Creative Manchester for an evening that moves between science, art and philosophy…asking what it means to imagine the universe when what we know is only ever partial.
Reflecting on Cosmic Titans – an exhibition of sculpture, installation and photographic work created through collaborations between contemporary artists and leading researchers in quantum physics – the evening brings together leading voices in science and contemporary art, in a conversation hosted by historian and broadcaster Professor David Olusoga OBE.
Joining him are Professor Silke Weinfurtner, quantum physicist at the University of Manchester and co-founder of ARTlab; curator and astrophysicist Dr Ulrike Kuchner and acclaimed artist Conrad Shawcross RA whose work is featured within the exhibition.
Together they reflect on Cosmic Titans, a major touring exhibition created through collaboration between artists and quantum physicists. From black holes to dark matter, uncertainty and the edges of the observable universe, the exhibition invites audiences to encounter the cosmos in new ways.
Set within the award-winning First Light Pavilion, the event takes place in a cultural landscape shaped by deep scientific inquiry and creative experimentation. From pioneering radio astronomy to major contemporary cultural programmes, Jodrell Bank has become a rare space where disciplines don’t simply coexist but actively reshape one another.
The evening will conclude with a specially curated DJ set from artist and composer Matthew Woodham, whose work Superdecision features within the exhibition. Taking place in the Meridian Hall, the performance offers an immersive response to the themes of Cosmic Titans, inviting you to engage with the exhibition in an entirely new way…
As part of the evening, guests can also enjoy special after-hours access to the spectacular Cosmic Titans exhibition (ARTLab Nottingham, Lakeside Arts), bringing the topics of the discussion to life through striking installations.
This event forms part of Curious Universe, Jodrell Bank’s wider cultural season exploring the strange, expansive and often unsettling beauty of the cosmos through film, performance and family activities.
