Lovell Lecture Series

Dr Susanne P Schwenzer: Exploring Habitable Environments on Mars

£8 / £10

7.30pm – 9pm

A series of public lectures named in honour of Sir Bernard Lovell, the Founder and first Director of Jodrell Bank Observatory.

Jodrell Bank is proud to be hosting the Lovell Lecture series in our Wolfson Auditorium. We will be hosting regular evening lectures and are delighted to welcome leading astrophysicists to Jodrell Bank.

LECTURE 6: Exploring Habitable Environments on Mars

Susanne’s talk will focus on the exploration of Mars, especially where it is concerned with finding habitable conditions and the questions if Mars could have ever hosted life. Landers, orbiters and rovers have been looking for water on Mars – and for the habitable conditions that water could create when it reacts with rocks. Susanne will bring examples from this exploration, especially from the Curiosity rover, where she is a science team member. But looking on Mars directly is not the only way to understand those environments. Therefore, the talk will also touch on analog environments here on Earth – and on experiments that are designed to answer questions about the question if there could ever have been life on Mars.

Speaker Bio

Susanne is a mineralogist working on Mars. She is a senior lecturer in the School of Environment, Earth and Ecosystem Sciences, and an associate director of AstrobiologyOU. Her research centers around Martian meteorites, Mars rovers and analog and experimental samples. Her main goal is to understand water-rock reactions that change environmental conditions throughout the geologic history of Mars.  She is involved with two Mars rovers: the Curiosity rover currently exploring Gale Crater and the future ESA ExoMars Rosalind Franklin Rover. Fun fact: before she became a researcher, she worked as a journalist.
