Terms and conditions

All education groups must agree to the following terms and conditions:


Education bookings must be confirmed, via our online booking form, at least 42 days (6 weeks) before your visit, except for last minute bookings. We reserve the right to cancel bookings that are not confirmed by this time.


Payment must be made at least 28 days (4 weeks) before your visit. If your school/college/establishment is unable to do this, you must have agreed another means of payment with us by this time. We reserve the right to cancel bookings after this deadline.

Extra numbers

If on the day you bring more pupils/students/adults than you originally paid for, these must be paid for upon arrival. However, we cannot accept more than 35 pupils/students per group. This is due to the legal maximum capacity of our teaching and indoor lunch spaces.

Reducing your numbers

If you need to reduce the numbers of your booking, you must do so at least 28 days before your visit. Otherwise we reserve the right to charge your school/college/establishment the original full cost of your visit. This is to cover staffing costs and resources which will already have been booked and purchased.

Absences on the day

We regret that we are unable to provide refunds for pupils/students who do not show up on the day. Processing refund payments for schools is a time-consuming process. In order to provide an efficient service, and to keep costs for schools as low as possible, we are unable to issue refunds.

Phone free zone

Whilst onsite, all visitors must place their mobile phones on flight mode, or switch them off. Mobile phones must not be used to send or receive calls/messages/data for any reason. This is a condition of visiting the site. Jodrell Bank is a live radio observatory which is in operation 24 hours a day. Mobile phone signals interfere with our radio telescopes, and disrupt our scientific research.

If you need to make a call during your visit, you are welcome to use one of our landlines; simply ask a member of our staff. If your school needs to contact you during the day, they can call our main reception on 01477 571 766. Our staff will then relay the message to you.

Cancelling your trip

The University of Manchester operates the following cancellation policy:

If you cancel your visit 28 days or more in advance, your school/college/establishment will be refunded in full. If you cancel your visit fewer than 28 days prior to the date of your trip, your school/college/establishment will be charged the full cost of your visit. This is to cover staffing costs and resources which will already have been booked and purchased. If we are able to fill your booking, we may be able to offer a refund at our discretion.

Late arrivals/early departures

If for any reason your group is late arriving, or needs to leave earlier than planned on your itinerary, your booked workshops may need to be shortened, or cancelled.

Behaviour of pupils/students on site

All pupils/students must be actively supervised by a responsible adult at all times during their visit. There must be a suitable ratio of adults to pupils, taking into account pupils’ age and maturity (we recommend a ratio of 1:6 for Reception and Year 1 pupils and a ratio of 1:7 for Years 2-6).

Cancellation due to extraordinary circumstances

In the rare circumstance of a disruption causing your trip to be cancelled in an unforeseen and unavoidable circumstance (e.g. severe weather such as snow or storm), we will endeavour to reschedule your trip for a future date.
