Wednesdays 3rd April, 8th May, 5th June, 3rd July, 7th August, and 4th September
Stars and Stones offers a rare opportunity to explore The Blackden Trust and Jodrell Bank Discovery Centre on the same day. You’ll have the chance to discover the science and the stories that link these two great sites and to find out more about the visionary people who have cared for and evolved these magical places.
Priced at just £32.50 per person (£29.50 for students and over 60s), this exclusive event features fascinating talks and tours at both Jodrell Bank, and the historic Blackden Trust site, and includes morning coffee and lunch.
About Stars and Stones
Jodrell Bank and the Blackden Trust are close neighbours. Whilst one is home to the Lovell Telescope and ground breaking discoveries in radio astronomy, the other boasts evidence of human activity dating back 10,000 years and is the home of renowned author Alan Garner.
At the heart of the Blackden site are Toad Hall, the late medieval home of Alan and Griselda Garner, where Alan finds inspiration for his writing, and The Old Medicine House, a Grade II timber framed building from Staffordshire that he and Griselda saved from destruction by dismantling and faithfully re-erecting it at Blackden.
Here you will learn about the subtle parallels that link Jodrell Bank and Blackden, enjoy a tour of the Old Medicine House and have a glimpse of just some of the fascinating archaeological and historical resources that the Trust exists to preserve.
From Blackden you will be able to see ‘Lovell’s Contraption’ from the opposite side of the railway tracks. Here, visitors will gain a unique perspective on Jodrell Bank and its work set against its rural cultural context.
Following your morning visit to the Blackden Trust, you will transfer to Jodrell Bank Discovery Centre for a light lunch (own transport required). This will be followed by a talk on the history and heritage of Jodrell Bank and a chance to take in the Discovery Centre’s exhibitions and displays or while away the afternoon exploring the gardens and grounds.
While at Jodrell Bank you will gain an insight into the science and the ‘Big Questions’ that we all seek to answer, similarly reflected in the work of Alan Garner and represented by the ancient archaeology of The Blackden Trust, neatly tying the two elements of your trip together.
The event includes a visit to both The Blackden Trust and Jodrell Bank Discovery Centre. Morning Coffee and lunch is included and you’ll experience fascinating talks/tours at each venue.
